Best Salt Lake City Travel Guide: Things to Do, Where to Stay & Tips

Getting There

Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC) serves as Utah’s primary aviation gateway, located 7 miles west of downtown with direct flights to 107 destinations across 8 countries and 40 U.S. states. The airport handles 1,510 daily passenger flights operated by 13 airlines, with Delta Air Lines, Frontier Airlines, and United Airlines providing the most frequent service. Each week, 850 domestic flights and 179 international flights depart from SLC. The new airport facility (opened 2020) offers modern amenities and efficient connections. Ground transportation from the airport includes TRAX Green Line light rail directly to downtown (30 minutes, ~$2.50), UTA bus services, rental cars from all major agencies, ride-share services (Uber, Lyft), and taxis. The airport is accessible from I-80 at exit 115B or I-215 at exits 22/22B, and from North Temple Street and Utah State Route 154. Amtrak’s California Zephyr serves Salt Lake City with routes from Chicago and San Francisco. Greyhound and other interstate buses connect to major Western cities. No visa required for U.S. citizens; international visitors should verify passport requirements.

Getting Around

TRAX light rail is Salt Lake City’s most efficient public transportation, operating three lines (Blue, Red, Green) serving 52 stations across the valley with 15-minute frequency during peak times. The Green Line connects the airport directly to downtown, the Blue Line runs from downtown to Draper, and the Red Line serves the University of Utah to South Jordan. All TRAX trains are electric-powered and operate seven days per week. Downtown features a free fare zone on TRAX and buses – if your trip begins and ends within this zone, no payment required. The UTA bus system provides comprehensive coverage throughout the metro area. FrontRunner commuter rail connects Salt Lake to Provo and Ogden for regional travel. The Hive Pass ($42/month) grants unlimited access to TRAX, FrontRunner, all buses, UTA On Demand, and includes GREENbike bike-share membership. Ride-share services (Uber, Lyft) operate throughout the city. Rental cars are recommended for exploring nearby ski resorts (30-45 minutes to canyons) and national parks. Taxis available but less common than ride-share. Downtown is highly walkable with the wide grid system (planned for ox-cart turning radius). GREENbike stations provide bike-share throughout downtown and university areas. Winter (November-April) requires snow tires or chains for mountain driving.
