FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) — Left-hander Erik Rivera, who plays for the Red Sox minor league teams, pitched in his Boston uniform Tuesday for Puerto Rico against his Major League team in a preseason exhibition game.
The Red Sox made some players available to Puerto Rico because that team was shorthanded. Among them was Rivera, who is Puerto Rican.
Rivera entered with two outs in the sixth inning and failed to retire any batters. He faced three, walked two and allowed one hit before being retired in Puerto Rico’s 5-3 victory.
This was one of several games between Major League clubs and teams from different countries as players prepare for the World Baseball Classic, which begins Thursday.
Rivera, 24, spent last season playing for the Red Sox’s High-A affiliate in Greenville, South Carolina.
