Massachusetts State Police sergeant charged with assault against motorist

A Massachusetts State Police sergeant faces assault charges after investigators say he pepper sprayed a motorist in the face during a traffic stop in western Massachusetts.

Sgt. Joel Daoust is charged with assault and battery and assault with a dangerous weapon after being investigated by fellow State Police troopers assigned to the Hampden District Attorney’s office. He is scheduled to be rooted on April 3.

A DA statement says Daoust initiated a traffic stop on Jan. 3 in Springfield after a motorist allegedly sped and crossed over lanes. During that stop, the DA statement alleges, Daoust used both physical force and deployed oleoresin capsicum (OC) spray against the driver.

The Herald has reached out to the MSP for additional information.
